Best morning of the season for me. Big Willie still lives. I'm thinking Mason will be late for school tomorrow. The birds did not come off the trees until 8. They do weird stuff this time of year. There were four jakes and Willie all together. I cleared out a good hiding spot for Mason where Willie flew down. You all know I think turkeys are the dumbest animals in the woods. Willie, however, is the luckiest bird I've run across ever. I think we had him inside of 30 yds a half dozen times last year and never fired a shot. His luck continues this year. Three times since Saturday. A cat with nine lives has nothing on Willie.

Thanks fellas. I have no expectations of killing him. I do expect to hear him gobble 100+ times and I'm sure we will have him in range. He will turn at just the right time to avoid a face full of lead. Who cares, the fun is in all the previously mentioned parts. Mason is pretty excited to go, rain or not. Willie will win again I'm sure, just fun to play the game.

Go in there expecting not to kill him and you will!

We sure didn't. He was roosted across the road from us. I figured it was a slam dunk deal. People say you cannot call turkeys across a road, creek or fence, but I know better. I have had three occasions when the bird was across that road just as this one was. I'm 3 for 3, until today. Mason kept bugging me to cross the road and circle him. So, abou 830 we made our move. Exactly as I told him would happen, he gobbled on the ridge we had just left. Some lessons you just can't explain, you have to take a long walk to demonstrate. Hehe. Now, I'm going without Mason tomorrow and when I don't kill him again, I'll have to come up with another excuse! He probably gobbled 100 times, so it was a good morning

Yep. I'd guess I know who it was too. Or at least who was doing the calling. It's all good. If that lucky bird is dead he's already provided far more entertainment than most.
